Review : 17 Peep Show Mascara, Barry M Wink Eyeliner and Bourjois Healthy Mix Concealer

Oooh I have some new favourite beauty products to tell you about!

Lately I’ve been trying out lots of new products!

17 Peep Show Mascara - This mascara promises voluptuous volume – a full, flirty flutter with no clumps. I was a bit like, “yeah, whatevs” at first because its well known (by me) that EVERY mascara is clumpy at first, even the ones that go onto be amazing (except YSLs Luxurious Mascara).

Amazingly, this one isn’t clumpy even on your first use and with no wand wiping! Added to that, its the best mascara I’ve tried in a long long time. It thickens and lengthens lashes very well and stays put all day with no flaking.

I typically apply 3-4 little coats each on the top and bottom lashes (if that makes sense!) but you can add more mascara for a more vamped up look and still not get any clumping – check out the pictures below!

Please excuse the picture – hopefully you can see what I mean… this is definitely my new favourite mascara!

I got given this mascara (I work at Boots head office) – it retails for £6.29 online or instore

Barry M Wink Eyeliner - Barry M are marketing this as a ‘marker pen’ eyeliner, which is a cute idea and one that I’m definitely attracted to the apparent simplicity and ease of.

I love the cute bright pink packaging and price (£5.49) but I’ve found the actual product a little harder to get along with. I’ve found it difficult to do a very good eyeliner line with this pen. I’ve found it works well when I hold the pen vertically against my eye for a thin line along the lashes, but when I try to do a thick winged line its a lot more challenging. Thats not to say it isn’t possible – blogger LionLovingTiger is clearly an expert at it! – but its apparent from the mixed reviews that this isn’t the easy eyeliner wonderproduct I was hoping for. For beginners non-eyeliner pros, gel eyeliner applied with a brush is still definitely the easiest route to winged eyeliner perfection.

I also noticed that my eyeliner pen started to fade after just a few weeks, so although this product is cheap it actually doesn’t look like it will last long…unlike the similar Collection 2000 Extreme liner which is just £3 and lasts for months and months.

Bourjois Healthy Mix concealer  – I have a soft spot for Bourjois (and they’re really Chanel, don’t ya know!) as it was my makeup drug of choice in my teenage years (along with 17 and Natural Collection of course!). I bought this concealer after running out of Benefit Boi-ing which I sure wasn’t paying £15 to replace. I wanted something light and in a suitable skin tone (actually much harder to find than you’d think for pale ladies!) that also had good coverage.

I wandered into Boots, tried a couple of different concealers and liked this one immediately. It feels very creamy and moisturising on the skin and is probably the lightest one I tried – no orange residue here! The coverage is medium, so more for hiding a few dark circles than for really heavy duty skin issues, but for general use it works really well.

Healthy Mix concealer is £7.49 so about half the price as my previous Benefit ones – plus I paid for it and the Barry M product with Advantage Card points, so I didn’t think of it as spending money!

Healthy Mix foundation is also supposed to be awesome – I’m happy with Max Factor Experience for now (and have a couple of bottles to get through!) but I’ll definitely check it out after that.

Have you tried any new beauty products lately, or seen any you’d like to try? Let me know!

What I’m wearing today

Getting ready for work in the morning is gloomy and grey now that winter is here. Its barely light by the time I wake up which doesn’t make me want to spring out of bed! In fact I’m getting up about 30 minutes (3 snoozes) after my alarm which is something I really need to stop doing.

This morning, Marty sensed my grogginess and helped me pick my outfit! Here he is perched on top of my wardrobe giving a purr or a hiss to my choices!

Nail wise I’m sporting 17 fast finish in knockout red. The fast finishes come in great colours but seem to chip very quickly for me.

I’m wearing a black sheer Primark skirt with embroidery stuff along the bottom. Marty is chillaxing behind me!

Plus a black vest top and red cardigan (its cold!).

What are you wearing today?

Vintage 1950s makeup look tutorial

I feel a little bit of a phoney doing on a post on how to get a 1950s makeup look (or any makeup look for that matter!). After all, there are so many great bloggers out there doing fab tutorials on youtube and their blogs and I wouldn’t say I know THAT much about makeup – not like my friend Kate who is a makeup artist runs her own blog over here.

What I do think I bring to the table (hey Lee!) is the perspective of someone who’s not an expert -just someone with a basic level of skill – who can hopefully show you how you can achieve the same look even if you don’t have a lot of time or expert knowledge.

Okay so onto the look! This is my perfect look for both day and night-time. Some people may think that winged eyeliner is a little too much for the day, but every time I do my makeup for work, I can’t resist putting it on. It just gives a hint of glamour to an otherwise boring working day! To take the look from day to night, you could just wear lip balm or gloss during the day and then add bright red lipstick in the evening.

First up, here I am with no makeup on – eek lets slap some slap on quick!!

First thing – base. I don’t use a primer so the first thing I apply is Max Factor Experience foundation in fresh ivory. It gives great, sheer coverage and I use it in conjunction with some concealer too on any spots or dark circles (I use boi-ing by Benefit, which is below)

Next up, I use a brown eyeshadow to fill in any gaps in my eyebrows and make them look a little more defined and prominent. I find it amazing that I didn’t do this for years since it makes me look so much better.

As you can see, I use a chanel brown eyeshadow from a discontinued quad eyeshadow, but you can use any eyeshadow/eyeliner that suits your eyebrow colour. A lot of people think that its better to use a special brow shader pencil, but I find that normal eyeshadow works best for me.

Here I am with eyebrows filled in – muuuuccch better!

Next, add blusher! I use a sparkly shimmery rose pink blush from Chanel, but you can really easily find great blushers from cheaper brands. Bourjois especially do great ones.

Next, curl your eyelashes for that wide-eyed pin up look! But before you apply any mascara, we need to do the eyeliner first!

This is the eyeliner that I like by Collection 2000- its £2.99, it lasts a long time and it does the job!

First, steady your eyeliner – applying hand on a steady surface if possible. Next, apply a thin layer of eyeliner almost between your eyelashes as if you’re joining up the dots.

Next, go over that first line of eyeliner using thicker, broader strokes. This can be difficult to get right but its easy to hide your mistakes under another line of eyeliner! Just keep practicising until you get it right. I find it helps to use your other hand to stretch out your eyelid (as it were!). And I often go over the winged tip several times so don’t panic if you don’t get it right the first time, just get a cotton bud, clean it up and try again.

Next up, apply mascara – I use bourjois volume glamour which is fab.

At this point, take a moment to admire your handiwork and your pretty pretty eyes. Aw.

The final finishing touch for my easy 1950s look is a slick of red lipstick. I use Estee Lauder Pure Color lipstick in crystal red.

This lipstick is a moist, glossy red that is easy to apply almost like a gloss (like a gloss though it will have less staying power than a more matte lipstick). I find it much easier to apply though.

Apply and don’t forget to blot with a tissue! To complete my 1950s (meets 2010s) look, I paired with a polka dot top, skinny jeans and trainers! Next I just need to find someone to show me how to do a good victory roll!

What I’m wearing today

Chanel nail polish in lotus rouge. A dark red wine kinda red. I was obsessed with finding the perfect red wine red when I was 14. And then again at 17, 22, 24 and 26. Barry M do a good wine red one which is pretty similar coloured but a lot cheaper than the chanel one.

Chanel = £17.50

Barry M = £2.50 – if you get it on 2 for £5, which you should

Although the bottle of the chanel polish is lovely, I wouldn’t pay so much for a nail polish – The chanel polish chips quickly and is not longer lasting or better quality than a £3 polish, in my experience.

Plus chanel and bourjois are kinda the same.

But if you’re interested in all things Chanel, check out the beauty look book – Sabrina has an amazing passion for Chanel and documents all her latest finds with lots of lovely pictures!

The best beauty blogs (according to me!)

I read a lot of beauty blogs (a lot!) and have found some really great ones that I really rate. Here’s a run-down of them if you’re interested in that sort of thing! I’m not entirely sure why I like to keep up to date with whats going on in the beauty world since I don’t actually *buy* many new beauty products at all! I guess I just like to look at pretty sparkly things in case there’s anything out there that is worth buying!

  • British Beauty Blogger – probably the best I’ve come across in terms of the sheer access to new products and the frequency of posts.
  • Lipglossiping – A great, great beauty blog by Charlotte who’s personality and love of makeup really shines through. Her enthusiasm for beauty is catching!
  • The Beauty Look Book – A simply incredible blog, which I can only fathom is run by a woman who is surely a millionaire judging by the amount of makeup she buys! Check out her gorgeous pictures and swatches of new products compared with other, similar products. Her extensive makeup knowledge is just incredible.
  • Beauty and the bullshit – This is a hilarious blog run by a former beauty industry insider who dishes the dirt (and bullshit) on various beauty companies. See this brilliant post on L’oreal for a great example.
  • A beauty junkie in London – I had to include the blog that turned me onto the incredible Collection 2000 Extreme liquid eyeliner which I use every day and is only £2.99!
  • The Boots Beauty Blog – The personalities of the girls who run it shine through and I like how the questions and opinions of customers are brought into the blog.

Happy reading!
